TV DVD Combi Review - Toshiba 19DV616DB

The Toshiba 19DV616DB is my favourite TV DVD Combi of the moment. If you are looking at digital televisions, perhaps to replace a bedroom or kitchen portable in readiness for the digital switchover, then honestly, you may as well get a TV with a built-in DVD, because they cost very little extra and you have the added benefit of being able to play your favourite DVDs in the bedroom or kitchen. But why am I raving about the Toshiba model? Well, please stay with me for a couple of minutes and I will explain:

Compact and Good-Looking
This model has a classy, quality, glossy white finish which makes it look a lot more expensive than it is. It's also slim – unbelievably so when you think that it has a built-in DVD player too. The unit's size is (H)33.3cm, (W)47.6cm, (D)6.7cm. The weight is 4.5kg unpackaged.

Great Picture Quality
This is one of the advantages of buying a TV DVD Combi from a leading electronics manufacturer like Toshiba – they just get this stuff so right. You will have to pay a lot more money to get this sort of picture quality from several other manufacturers I could mention. Some technical details – the contrast ratio is an impressive 1,000:1 and the response time is a very hard-to-beat 5ms.

Really Easy to Use
The Toshiba TV DVD Combi couldn't be easier to set up and use. The on-screen menus are logical and easy to follow, and there is a superb 8-day Electronic Programme Guide, as well as a fast “now and next” feature.

Sound Quality
The unit has a NICAM sound system, with two-channel stereo and an output of six watts over its two speakers. The sound quality is probably the only thing I can criticise a little on this model. Personally, I found it fine for the bedroom, but there are reports of the output being a little inadequate if there is background noise where the TV is being used. It's a minor negative point to weigh against all the positives in my opinion.

Freeview Built-in
There is a powerful freeview digital tuner which "found more channels than any other TV in the house" according to one buyer, so if you are in a freeview area it is very likely that all available freeview channels will be detected.

Quality DVD Player Comes as Standard
The built-in DVD player is a quality unit and you can play back the following formats of DVD, photos and music: DVD; CD-DA; CD-R/RW; Video CD; DVD-R/RW; MP3; DivX; jpeg.

Better for the Environment
This model is specifically designed to use less energy than standard and many older models, so it really a little bit better for the environment. Every little helps!

Great value for money.
Overall, I give the Toshiba 19DV616DB 9/10, having deducted one point because personally I would have preferred more powerful speakers. Despite this minor point, it's a great TV DVD Combi and an excellent replacement for that old portable TV in the bedroom or kitchen. I don't know how long it will be available at the current price, but if you ask me, it's a steal right now.
